False Bay

Take your shoes off if you plan to visit this shallow bay. When the tide goes out, the water empties and leaves a muddy bay where marine birds feast on shell fish until the tide comes back in. False Bay offers views of the Olympic Peninsula and is located off of False Bay Road; a cycling favorite.

Caution... this beach frequently smells like "low tide"... which smells kind of muddy and fishy. This beach does definitely not make our top 10 places to have a picnic in the San Juan Islands list.

If you are facing the water and you follow the road to your left it will bring you to Cattle Point Road. If you take a right onto Cattle Point Road you can reach other cool places like Eagle Cove, Granny's Cove, South Beach, Mount Finlayson, Fourth of July Beach, and the cattle point lighthouse.

If you are facing the water and you follow the road to the right you will reach a three-way intersection... taking a right will take you back to town ( Friday Harbor ). If you take a left onto Bailer Hill Road it will take you to the west side of San Juan Island and eventually to Roche Harbor. Along the way you can stop off at Dead Mans Cove, Limekiln State Park ( a.k.a. whale watch Park ), and San Juan County Park. Make sure to bring along a simple roadmap so you don't get lost.
