San Juan Island's Mt. Young

If you like to hike and want to see an expansive marine view of the Pacific Northwest from atop a mountain, then you will want to hike up a trail to Mount Young.

The hiker’s reward is a sweeping eastern view of the islands, including Henry, Pearl and Spieden Islands. Also visible to the southeast are the Olympics, one of the best views of that range from the San Juans.

This well maintained trail is connected to another trail starting at British Camp. You can park at British Camp for a longer walk or for a shorter but steep walk you can park on the side of the road along West Valley Road to begin the trail up to Mount Young.

The hike is about ¼ of a mile and takes about 10 minutes to ascend but it is steep so make sure you bring good shoes, water and don’t forget your camera!

From here you will find north western views; perfect for watching sunsets. Once you come to a clearing, you will have a terrific view of the Olympic Peninsula, Canadian Gulf Islands, Henry Island, Pearl Island, Spieden Island and Garrison Bay.

If you haven’t had enough, you can keep walking until you find a really steep hillside. Hike up this trail to bring you to the top of Mount Young.

You can return by following the trail straight down that leads past a small grave yard for Royal Marine Light Infantry and one civilian, during the 1860’s or you can walk back through the forest until you reach your car.

Mount Young easily makes our top 10 viewpoints in the San Juan Islands list. It almost made our top 10 hikes in the San Juan Islands list but the hike is only 10 minutes long! Bring along your camera for the views! .
